Everything a journalist needs on Nogoon Nutag and Wollken Studio, in one place.

Boilerplate

Short (one line): Nogoon Nutag is a Mongolian rangeland-responsibility initiative, funded by the Berlin-based fibre brand Wollken Studio.

Standard (one paragraph): Nogoon Nutag ("Green Homeland") exists to bring sustainable, ethical products from the Mongolian pasture lands to the global market with their real added value kept in Mongolian hands, so the culture and the land can be sustained for the long term. It is funded by Wollken Studio, a Berlin-based brand built on ethically sourced Mongolian yak wool and cashmere. Together they organized a tri-voice side event, "Pasture Land and Sustainable Production," at UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar in August 2026.

Long version:

Nogoon Nutag ("Green Homeland") is a Mongolian NGO working to keep the value of Mongolia's natural fibres within the communities and landscapes that produce them. Founded around a simple principle — that Mongolia's yak, sheep wool and cashmere should reach global markets as high-value finished products rather than primarily as low-value raw materials — the initiative works toward sustainable pasture management, ethical sourcing and a verified eco-standard for Mongolian natural-fibre products. Its work connects herders, manufacturers, certifiers, policymakers and international markets, with the long-term goal of making healthy land and quality production economically sustainable for herder communities.

Wollken Studio is the commercial business created to make that mission financially self-sustaining. Rather than relying on grants to fund the work, Wollken Studio develops and sells finished Mongolian fibre products under its own brand, allowing value to be captured further along the supply chain and reinvested into the wider initiative. The approach is built around the belief that sustainability must work not only environmentally and socially, but economically — creating real demand for responsibly produced fibre and giving herders a reason to prioritise quality and healthy pasture over herd numbers.

The project began in 2023 through work with Mongolian SME manufacturers, opening European export routes for leather, cashmere and wool products and building relationships across the production network. After three years of working inside that system, the team shifted its focus in 2026 from exporting semi-finished production to developing finished products for the international market. Wollken Studio's first collection, The Wollken Studio Project, places Mongolian yak fibre at its centre, supported by sheep-wool products. The brand was launched at TrendSet München, where it received positive feedback from the European market.

The next stage is to connect this market model with broader structural change in Mongolia. Following the initiative's contribution to a COP17 side event, Nogoon Nutag is working toward a Responsible Production Standard for Mongolian natural-fibre products and continued work on pasture regeneration. The long-term vision is a closed value chain in which demand for high-quality Mongolian fibre supports fairer prices for herders, healthier pasture and greater value retained within Mongolia — with Wollken Studio serving as the market-driven engine that helps make that system possible.
